In light of recent events, the world has seen that Mother
Nature's wrath can be just as harsh on animals as people.
consult the following check list to learn several simple
and effective things you
can do to help save the life of your pet in the event of
darker days.
Emergency Preparedness for PETS, simple things you can do to
ensure the survival of your pet in the event of a disaster
- acquire a pet carrier for each pet and familiarize the
animal with the enclosure
- ensure your pets vaccinations and records are up to
date
- have a leash with a
properly fitting collar on hand
- attach vital vaccination and license ID to the collar
- In your home determine the safest place
to keep your pet during an emergency. The area should be away
from windows and easily cleaned.
- have an ample supply of a dry type
- less palatable food and kitty litter on site
- have plenty of newspaper, plastic bags, cleaner and
disinfectants to properly handle pet waste.
- have non-spill water a food bowls
- have a weeks supply of any medication the pet is
taking
- have photos of your pet to aid in
identification should it stray during an emergency
- blankets,
towels, toys and special treats should be components of an
emergency kit.
If you plan on leaving your animal behind in
your home remember the following
- birds must be fed daily in order to survive.
Use special food dispensers.
- never leave a cat with a dog even if the
two are normally friendly with each other
- confine and keep small pets such as
birds, hamsters, fish and reptiles away from cats and dogs
- provide a high ground in the event of flooding
- turn off house electrical, gas or other power sources
when vacating residence
- leave a sign or note on the door of your residence to
inform rescue personnel that there are animals within the
dwelling.
